If you're planning a family photography session and trying to work out what it should cost, you're not alone; it's one of the most common questions I get asked before anyone books. Pricing varies a lot between photographers, and it's not always clear what you're actually paying for. So here's a straightforward breakdown of what family photography costs on the Gold Coast, using my own packages as a real example.
What affects the price
Before getting into specific packages, it helps to understand what actually moves the price up or down. For most Gold Coast family photographers, including me, the main factors are:
Session length. A quick 30-minute session costs less than a full hour, which costs less again than an extended 90-minute session.
Weekday or weekend. Weekday sunrise or sunset sessions can vary in price from weekend availability, since weekends are in higher demand.
Number of people. A small family of three or four is simpler to photograph than a large extended family gathering, and pricing can reflect that.

What a mini session costs
My Mini Session sits at $250 and is a good option if you want quality family photos without a big time or cost commitment. It includes a 30-minute session, available on weekday sunrises or sunsets, at one location of your choice. You'll walk away with 10 professionally edited, high-resolution images, plus a short pre-shoot phone consultation if you'd like to talk through your vision beforehand. Everything is delivered through an online gallery for easy viewing and downloading.
I believe every family deserves the chance to have beautiful, professional photos of themselves, not just families who can stretch to a full session. That's a big part of why I offer Mini Sessions: to make quality family photography genuinely accessible, without cutting corners on the experience or the final images.
What a standard family session costs
The Family Session, at $500, is my most popular package and the one most families choose. It's a full hour at one location of your choice, giving enough time to capture a real range: posed group shots, candid moments, individual portraits, without feeling rushed. You'll receive 50 to 60 professionally edited images, well beyond what a quick session can offer, along with the same pre-shoot planning and consultation options.
For most families, this is the sweet spot: enough time and enough images to properly tell the story of where you're at right now, without paying for more than you need.
What an extended session costs
For bigger families, or if you want more variety in your images, the Extended Family Session at $700 covers up to 90 minutes across one or two locations. You'll get 70 to 80 professionally edited images, plus a physical 8x12 fine art print and five 6x4 prints included, so you walk away with something tangible, not just digital files. This option suits larger extended families, multi-generational sessions, or families who simply want more time and more variety across different settings.
Where I sit on price
I'd describe my pricing as mid-range for the Gold Coast. You'll find photographers charging less, as they are less experienced and doing it for their portfolio, and you'll also find premium photographers charging considerably more. My pricing reflects a full, professional experience, pre-shoot planning, a real consultation if you want one, and a genuinely useful number of edited images, without pushing into premium territory.
Why professional photography costs what it does
It's worth understanding what goes into that price beyond the hour or so you spend in front of the camera. A photographer's experience and education factor in too; years spent developing a style, learning how to direct a session, and understanding light don't happen overnight, and that expertise is part of what you're paying for. Professional camera gear and lenses represent a significant ongoing investment, and that equipment needs regular maintenance and eventual replacement. Editing every gallery takes real time, often several hours per session, using paid software subscriptions. Then there's the online gallery platform itself, which comes with its own ongoing fees to host and deliver your images securely. None of this is visible in the final product you receive, but it's all part of what makes a professional session different from someone shooting on a phone or a basic camera.
